the beatles were four guys from liverpool who somehow went from playing sweaty clubs to rewriting the basic operating system of popular music in less than a decade. john lennon, paul mccartney, george harrison, and ringo starr absorbed rock and roll, r&b, country, skiffle, girl groups, motown, indian music, classical composition, and whatever else wandered within grabbing distance, then kept mutating until the band that recorded “love me do” barely resembled the one that made *revolver*, *sgt. pepper*, the white album, and *abbey road*. they changed songwriting, recording, album culture, fashion, fandom, and the very idea of what a rock band was allowed to become. plenty of artists have sold records. the beatles changed what everybody made after hearing them.
